I'm the 47 year old writer - I like both. Madewell makes sturdy basics that I really like. I live in their shorts (the Emmett shorts are perfect), I have several sun hats, I'm wearing a Madewell sweatshirt right now. It's all-cotton stuff that looks a touch more stylish (I think) and I don't have to worry about ruining. I wear a lot of J Crew, too, but I find the quality to be more hit or miss, and I think a lot of the styles are a little fussier, too.[/quote]
