You can type instead of cut-and-paste, of course. The key is to make sure that each quote starts and ends with the proper bracketed section.

Sometimes I find this easier in Word.

This is also a great way to trim down long exchanges. If you're careful about where the brackets are, you can trim sections of earlier quotes to just what's relevant.
