I am agnostic on the gym part--you can do a lot with some free weights/resistance bands and a bench--but if you have crummy form or do not approach it correctly, especially with heavy weights, you can really hurt yourself. I had a buddy who was a Marine show me the basics. If you just want to build tone/strength, I have a book called Women's Strength Training Anatomy that is very good.
