That was the original plan when the roadmap to recovery was unveiled in March. There was an article on NBC for about the number of child care They have closed down in the entire area, around 2,200. Montgomery county needs to allow child care centers to reopen at full capacity ASAP.
Ours is underenrolled and has a bunch of spots available. I don’t think opening up more spots will make a difference. I know a lot of centers in the area still actively recruiting families to take existing spots.
These must be crappy centers or home daycares. Spots are very limited due to the closings. If you do not have a spot for your child now, you should worry. I would get a spot if possible even if you hold it for a month or two. The flood is really coming for parents that are returning to work and need care.
It's so hard to tell what is going on at ours. There is generally a long wait list but when they opened back up with reduced capacity, no existing families were turned away and we knew of others on the waitlist who were offered a spot. DD's class is still well under the capacity limit and I'm not sure how many of those empty spots are being paid for by families who want to hold their spot. It's a Pre-K class, so I think anyone who thought they might return in the fall has probably been paying. But for anyone who plans to wait till there's a vaccine, why bother for that age because we could be looking at another 6-12 months at least, so you might be paying for a spot you'll never use. Obviously the calculations would be different for a younger child where care would be needed beyond the next year. We have a younger child at an in-home daycare and they are full.
