"I live on the gulf coast of Florida in a touristy area. Please tell her to stay home. Starting around 6 weeks ago, we were inundated with tourists from up north. Maybe 5% of them wore masks and practiced social distancing. Anyone who started traveling 6 weeks ago is obviously part of a self selected group who aren't taking COVID seriously. Most of us think this group is a huge factor in the skyrocketing numbers down here."
Florida is a big state. There are parts where the numbers are high and other parts where they are not quite as a high as The DMV area. It may not be too bad if they’re going to a county that’s not “in the thick of it” and/or they are not visiting bars/restaurants or crowded places outdoors. I speak from personal experience as someone who just visited Florida (but stayed at an AirBnB with a friend’s family and grandparents). Maybe talk to her about safe practices when they’re together? But at the end of the day, it’s her life, her choice. Help her think it through and come to HER OWN decision.
Listen to first poster, and not second. There was a huge influx of visitors from elsewhere and they are still coming in droves. No one is stopping anyone at the FL border. Just because some areas of FL don't have the high numbers right now doesn't mean anything. Eventually, those numbers will be going up and those people will still fill up hospitals - including in other counties. The healthcare system here is on the verge of where NY was. If your mother comes to FL and gets sick there is a good chance she might not get a hospital bed. Tell her THAT, and then let her make her own choice.
