Before moving to D.C. for college I always assumed that no white man who had access to eligible white women would want to get serious with a black woman. I was proven wrong again and again. I do think that some people who would, in theory, prefer to date a white person actually have a set of other preferences that they mistakenly associate with whiteness. I suspect that quite a few people, Gen X and younger, are more open than they think when they meet the 'right' person.
I see this in the black community as well when black men will claim that they can’t find a black woman interested in x, y, x, even when black women interested in those things actually outnumber black men. I saw this growing up with two of my cousins. And again in college. But it was not until I was in my 30s and in online communities or going to cons that it became glaringly obvious. Black men would ignore the existence of black womenswear in their fandoms. It was really a big deal when I met DH (we’re self-described black nerds) and realized that ALL of his AA male friends in our shared interest community were married to white or Asian women. A few had never dated a black woman and claimed that there aren’t any AA women where they meet women. And I’m standing right there pointing out 15 other black women in the room.
