From the principal today. Dear Parents and Students- The purpose of this letter is to inform you about another serious incident of racism and hate graffiti that occurred Friday night on the Walt Whitman High School campus. It came to my attention this morning that racist graffiti using the n-word and a drawing of a noose was spray painted on our campus. This vile graffiti is very similar to what was spray painted on our campus in late February of this school year. Once it was brought to our attention, we immediately covered up the graffiti and contacted the police. I met with officers from the Montgomery County Police Department this morning and we will continue to investigate this incident. I want to emphasize as strongly as possible that this racist and destructive behavior will not be tolerated in the Walt Whitman High School community. If it is discovered that our students were involved, they will receive serious consequences and may face additional charges from Montgomery County Police. I feel both outrage and deep grief that acts of racism and hate continue to occur at Walt Whitman. Just this past week, our students hosted two student-led forums titled “Racism Ends With Us.” In addition, our Race, Equity, and Wellness coalition held forums for our staff this week to process recent incidents of racism in the nation as we continue to plan how to combat hate in our own school community. This work builds on our efforts over the last two years to eliminate hate in all forms, including our partnership with the Anti-Defamation League and our implementation of OneWhitman. While I’m deeply discouraged by what occurred today, it will not deter us from our collective mission to end racism and build a safe and inclusive school community where ALL students can thrive. We will remain steadfast until every student feels like Whitman is their school and is a safe and welcoming place to learn and grow.
