Our DC2 is at one in the Richmond suburbs and I loved it. It's super clean, new building, nice outdoor space, and the teachers are great. Ours all have bachelor's degrees, have been at the school for at least 5 years, and they are very warm with the kids. The infants and toddlers are held a lot. DC2 loves going to school and is learning a lot - he's 3 y/o and knows the letters, numbers, and shapes and can count to 30, and is starting to recognize vowels. It's play-based. There are 12 kids in the class with 2 teachers and 1 instructional assistant. It's a franchise, so maybe ours is great because of the owners. The kids can do soccer or gymnastics too, at extra cost, but it's cheap. Food is OK, not great. Not a lot of sugar, but also not a lot of organic choices - for example the chicken nuggets are frozen. They do have a full time cook with an commercial kitchen, so the lunch is always warm and it's always a vegetarian option. Ours lets me bring organic grass-fed milk for the child. The security is top notch and ours is very strict about procedures and allergies. For example, they check the home-brought sunscreen to make sure there is no almond or coconut oil in it. The school is 100% nut free. Parents must use shoes covers in the baby room. The teachers help the kids in the bathroom and they assist and supervise with wiping, something that DC1's Montessori didn't do. Every class has bathrooms in the class and the teachers check and help with hand washing too. The hours are great too - 6:30 am to 6:30 pm. We pay $285/week, which to me it's almost unbelievable. DC1 was in preschool in McLean and we were paying over $600/week with after care. We also tried Bright Horizons with DC1 and this one is so so much better.
Wow that sounds great! Thanks so much for the detailed response. Seems like it will be a good option for those of us in Shepherd Park/Takoma. I imagine the costs differ by location - I’m sure the Primrose at Walter Reed won’t be as inexpensive as the one in the Richmond suburbs
