My son has had three A level coaches and 2 B level coaches and one 'substitute' who was probably C or D. One of the A coaches was really tight with the university coaches and new the 'politics' of the game, but was dismal on field. The other A coach was ok, but nothing spectacular. Last A coach must have got his license decades ago because his tactics and kid-management was awful. The D level coach was new and couldn't handle the parents. Knew the game but wasn't that good at coaching, but was by far the absolute best at getting the boys to compete hard and give it their best effort. Was a really good inspirational coach. One of the best coaches we ever had though was a parent who had to step in one day when a coach got a red card. He was a former rugby player who know manages several hundred employees of an investment bank. Had a great attitude of positive comments and constructive criticism for each boy, and only comments on the sideline were to get the kids to give their full effort. Boys really responded well to him (though they were kind of on autopilot as far as tactics went). Anyway, does licensing matter? I guess it shows commitment to the sport, but it's not necessarily a guarantee of good abilities.
