The youth soccer landscape is such a mess, it's amazing college recruiters even know where to go. Specific to the DAs if recruiters are looking at teams in or around the DC metro area, there are only three clubs (DC United, Bethesda and VDA) supporting DAs at the U16 and older ages. After u15, Arlington drops off and Loudoun moved to ECNL. As for the 05 ECNL teams in Virginia, all three (Loudoun, McLean and BRYC) seem to be struggling. Unfortunately, the mishmash of leagues operated through USYS, US Club Soccer and the DAs create this murky landscape and it doesn't seem to be improving. On the upside, it appears the CCL Showcase recently held in Richmond was very productive for number of older players (U16 & U17) to get on the radar of some D2 and D3 schools but I'd love to hear some quality insight about how boys - not involved in one of the three areas DAs - can get noticed for possible collegiate playing opportunities at the DI level.
Is it worth going to a D2 or D3 just for soccer that may not be strong academically if there is the option (being accepted) to attend a better academic school with no soccer? I think I would prefer my child to go to a better academic school and if they are determined and good enough to play at the college level to try out as a walk on. If they don't make it, they still get a higher level education. Thoughts?
