Doesn't sound like you have a very good team. If you had a strong 10/8, they should be playing it wide a lot on the attack. If the ball is staying in the middle a lot, you aren't stretching the field. How is his movement without the ball, he needs to create options.
I was about to write similar things. Start by looking at the central midfield fielder(s.) What is going on with them? Who are they passing to if not your child? Their job is to distribute the ball and it usually goes back and forth from the middle to wings and back to middle and back to the wings. Last question is very important. Is your DC creating an appropriate opening for the pass or hiding behind the other team's defenders? Is he moving a lot when he's not in possession of the ball to try to give his teammates options? The players down the center will usually get the ball more than a winger by design but he should be getting the ball plenty if he's getting open. DC is U12 but the wingers on both sides get the ball a lot even though one of them is not the strongest on the team. The kids in the center treat everyone equally nonetheless. Does your team have one good striker or one very good winger and they just keep passing to those kids even if others are in a better position? If so that's a bad strategy and your coach should fix that.
