The U is great, and Minneapolis is awesome, but it is more of a commuter campus, though that is getting better.
I would be careful if thats the vibe. My niece went to U of Rhode Island as a freshman and hated it bc the majority of the kids went home every weekend and it was dead on campus. She transferred to University of Illinois and is much happier.
It is not the vibe at UMN, although certainly more commuters than a school that isn't in the middle of a population center. Most big ten kids don't live in university dorms sophomore year - they are in private dorms and apartments. My kid is there and loving it. His friends all live on or near campus (Dinky Town) - even the one who moved home isn't far away. They do campus things and they also do city things. My kid is getting a great education for the price. Engineering school is excellent. If you are looking for classic New England beauty, it doesn't have that, but the campus is nice, there is plenty of green space (ok, white space) and there are tons of communal places indoors. It is a direct admit to the business school.
