I am cross posting this here, special concerns , and in jobs . Is there anyway as a fed I can add my ex spouse to my health insurance? The cost of cobra takes away from money available for our child.
Did your ex look at the Obamacare exchanges? They typically have open season in December, but for people with a "qualifying event" (like losing or quitting a job or having a change in family circumstances) the exchanges are open all year. For example, if your exDH is on COBRA because he lost his job, he can shop on the exchange for health insurance. If he currently has no job/income or is only receiving unemployment, that means his income may even be low enough to qualify for Medicald or a reduced rate on health insurance. Worth a look at least, because COBRA is almost always more expensive than health insurance on the exchange. Of course, there may be other reasons to keep COBRA if more expensive (has he already fulfilled deductible? has a health condition for which he needs to see certain doctors?)
