A lot of tough decisions need to be made. And there will be angry parents no matter what they do. The SB needs to spend less money on iPads and do some serious lobbying to make sure that when amazon dollars start rolling in, they get enough to pay for what needs to be done. Speaking of the affordable housing lobby, they are asking for half the amazon money. If aps cannot do the same, and parents don’t lobby the same, then this county is lost to all but those north of 50. And importantly, we need new leadership on the school board. And I mean no more talents, NVD etc, people who perpetuate problems.
We also need to socialize better metrics in AH discussions. The AH industry has learned that decrying the number of units “lost” best dramatizes their case. But in fact, a higher percentage of students are FRL now than 20 years ago, in virtually every SA school. At what point is the community doing enough to make APS accessible to those in need? Is half not enough? What’s a fair percentage? NO ONE wants to have this conversation, it’s fraught and unpleasant. but it’s an important one to have. If we get woke and angry and refuse to talk and just push for more AH without limit the end result is going to be largely poor, overcrowded schools that residents of means feel no connection to.
