It’s not like that at all. The club and coaches obviously have an interest in being competitive. Merit drives selection. Like any selection process there may be mistakes in talent evaluation. But no, this is not like admissions at your local Montessori or private school. Or some local clubs. Kids come from all over. And contrary to what some posters suggest, DAs at feeders like Arlington are not simply first team Arlington or Loudoun or Bethesda kids. The DA teams draw from a much wider area and many other clubs in the area. [/quote]

They don't select blindly based on club and recommendations.  They can evaluate talent in person easily (as can most people who have watched and played a sufficient amount of soccer).  Obviously they are not idiots so they will listen to input from known coaches.  Anybody trying out for DA at that age group who is talented will be on their radar.  But if you think selection depends on a better relationship with your kid's current coach or the academy coaches you are doing your children a serious disservice.  But sure, if it makes you feel better to think that your kid isn't selected for a particular team, or doesn't get admitted to their universities of choice, keep thinking that way and tell your kid that no matter how much they work and deserve it, it is your relationships that will make the difference between success and failure.
