Over 12,000 sex assault victims reported just now on FOX. The Boy Scouts Association is threatening to file for bankruptcy, because they can’t afford the payouts. The names of the perpetrators must be made public, and be held accountable.
These records go back to the 1960s. As we now know, any institution that has close contact with kids - the church, summer camps, Scouts, day cares, schools, and child sports - are magnets for pedophiles. Institutions have learned a lot and to some extent have tried to make amends. For example, when I was in Scouts in the 1990s we had a ton of training regarding appropriate conduct between boys and adults, strict rules about chaperoning (i.e., no adult ever alone with a child), and mandatory background checks for all adult leaders and any parent chaperoning and overnight trip. In my troop, adults were not allowed to ever share a tent with a Boy - even if it was your own son. It was expected that the boys share tents and the adults have their own separate tents. The system worked very well. I am anticipating the birth of my son. I will not hesitate to enroll him in co-ed Scouting.
