Wootton would probably be better for social anxiety. While there are wealthy people there, the Wootton community is not very into money. Its a nerdy community. Academics, STEM, theater and the marching band are the big things. Its an inside joke that the football team only exists for the marching band. The focus is on the band. If your child is competitive, then Wootton can either be good or bad. Its not a place to be if you aren't comfortable not being the smartest kid in the room even though you are really smart. Its good because it can give smart competitive kids a peer group where they thrive or it can create too much pressure in a kid that is academically competitive. If your kid doesn't care what scores or grades other kids get then they'll never notice or be bothered by it. My kids weren't at all and never feel pressure but they are more laid back. I have heard that the girls from Lakewood can be more snobby. Travilah and Dufief kids tend to meld together in middle school because they are so close to each other and share the same pool. Fallsmead kids seem nice. StoneMill seems fine too. We have friends at Churchill and they really like it to. They say that there is more intense and flashy wealth but there are plenty of normal UMC families there to. Every kid isn't wearing a $500 jacket, living in a 20,000 sq foot house or getting a foreign sports car when they turn 16. Beverly Farms and Wayside have normal UMC neighborhoods. Churchill has a good visual arts program. One concern though might be the potential for boundary changes. Wootton like WJ is probably more at risk than Churchill or Whitman in getting up in the diversity boundary changes. People aren't nervous about poor kids coming in but they are nervous about getting bussed out to help MCPS make another school look better. If this happened it would destroy the area because people are here for the schools.
