So here’s what I struggle with, and it’s the catch imho.. If the goal is to get a scholarship, after adding up the tens of thousands you’ve paid into the system, haven’t you already paid more than that scholarship is likely worth? Or at darn close.
~$2500 for travel in the early years is not a thing.. Any activities that add up to the similar amount of time spent on travel will be similar costs.. $200/month in total for 3 different activities is not a far reach. Non-competitive dance 2x a week for an hour each day by itself costs me $125/month. If you are paying $5-10K/year, that's $2,5-7,5K additional/yr. Depending on the school attended, that could significant or perhaps not. As the prices for education continue to increase, you probably are breaking even on costs and perhaps ahead based on value adding life experience. For those that utilize the "paid more than it's worth argument", none have ever really told us what your DC would do instead? What would those costs be? savings, vehicle, vacation, other sports, art.. and if you say pay for school, how do you value the opportunity cost lost of then doing "nothing" or close to it? If your DC doesn't get a scholarship but uses it to parlay it into a better school that leads to better things than without, you've given your DC a great gift. How is there not value in that?
