Yup. It's funny. The right has to walk a fine line. They have to be pro-Israel to appeal to evangelicals who believe the second coming is imminent. But they also have to be anti-semitic to get votes by stirring up hate in the anti-Semitic parts of the GOP base (and let me tell you, being from Alabama: that is a potent identity politics trope.) So Breitbart under Bannon did both. Forward article on Breitbart anti-semitism
He loved calling out “globalists” Two of Breitbart’s biggest enemies under Bannon’s direction were financier/philanthropist George Soros and presidential advisor/son-in-law Jared Kushner, both of whom are Jewish. The nationalist site frequently referred to them, and other Jewish figures like National Economic Council director Gary Cohn, as “globalists,” a term that the Anti-Defamation League said was a shorthand that the “alt-right” used to refer to Jews.
Breitbart’s “renegade Jew” headline is a perfect example of how Trumpian rhetoric works. Donald Trump’s great political discovery is that, if you want to win with Republican voters, it’s better to be a screeching train whistle rather than a dog whistle. Trump seems to have learned this lesson by paying attention to the hard-right media, particularly talk radio stars like Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage. But now in a feedback effect, Trump’s blunt bigotry is emboldening the right-wing media to go even further, thus giving us a Breitbart article titled: “BILL KRISTOL, REPUBLICAN SPOILER, RENEGADE JEW.” Written by notorious provocateur David Horowitz, the article uneasily combines a deployment of anti-Semitic tropes (a shadowy, wealthy, elite group led by the Jewish Kristol is trying to thwart the will of Republican masses) with standard neo-conservative dreck claiming the GOP is the only party for those who care about Israel. As Michelle Goldberg shrewdly explained in Slate, “What Breitbart is doing here is playing a double game, covering anti-Semitism with a tacky sheen of philo-Semitism. To define someone as a ‘Renegade Jew’ in a column about scheming elites written for an audience full of white nationalists is to signal to the sewers.”
Personally, I'd be much more negative about Horowitz, who is a despicable person. But the above gets the angle right, explaining the "double game" of rightwing pro-Israel anti-Semitic dogwhistles.
