I have to acknowledge, some of this took pushing on my part.  DS wasn't making progress on his IEP goals related to HW and assessments and was unwilling/unable/too anxious/too intimidated to effectively self-advocate for himself.  That was part of the 'lesson' as well.  Learning how to get out of a hole is a life skill kids have to learn.  But, some kids need more direct instruction/support/motivation than others.
