Eventually, you'll want a road bike, but if you're just starting out, get a hybrid or city bike.
I've ridden 100 miles in a day on a hybrid :)
I too prefer my hybrid. I’ll never switch to a road bike. OP, when I started, the hardest part wasn’t so much my legs or my endurance as much as it was getting my butt used to the seat. Don’t give up when your butt gets sore. Fight through it. Those first few rides are hard! They do make padded pants. I’ve never liked them, or the padded seat. I guess I’ve just gotten used to it and “seasoned” my derrière. LOL
I am the immediate PP who rode 100 on a hybrid. I actually intend to test ride some road bikes and eventually buy one - just haven't gotten around to it, and a little intimidated by the price tags. As for "padded pants" yes, bike specific shorts/leggings are very good. The compression increases comfort, among the other benefits such as being more aerodynamic, the visibility markings they usually have, etc.
