On 9/12/18, an incident occured during Janney+ JAC aftercare between a Counselor and student. A formal investigation of the employee and incident is underway through DCPS and Janney+. The employee has been suspended from Janney+ employment without pay. Please understand that I am bound by confidentiality and am not legally able to speak about the details of the investigation.
 
I can assure you that I take any allegations of misconduct extremely seriously and am working fastidiously with my staff to remediate circumstances that led to this incident and am training staff on best practices with students in challenging situations in an effort to prevent future issues. Further, staff will receive additional training on non-coercive de-escalation techniques, I am conducting thorough evaluations of JAC group student placement, and I am reviewing Janney+ standards of conduct for students and Counselors with staff. The Janney+ Executive Board is fully briefed on the matter and we are working closely to review and modify necessary policies and procedures to improve Program practices. 
 
Note that it was important to have full information on the incident, that the investigation be underway, and that an internal response be thoughtfully articulated before emailing our community. I anticipate, understand, and respect your concern. I cannot impress upon you enough that the safety of your children is my number one priority. Be confident that I will take swift action toward any needed Program and staff changes in order to ensure that Janney+ students are safe.
