It was incredibly useful, especially the Q and A from 3 parents with very different stories of their sons' recruitment. It's clearly a wild ride, full of surprises. Should be driven by the kid in consult with coaches. When college coaches call club and HS coaches, they generally want to know in the following order GRADES/GPA, is this a good kid (not a troublemaker), are the parents crazy?, and at the end, how's the lax IQ, work ethic etc. Soooo, all you crazy parents on this board better get a grip. Also, never ever carry your kid's gear unless they're very injured. Kids: pick up the water bottles, don't curse out your teammates, cheer them from the sidelines - the college coaches notice. No ROI for lax - we all knew that anyway. You will be able to tell if you're a top pick on coach's board because they will tell you and if they offer, they will give $$. You can and should straight up ask if you're not sure. Expect a few discussions over a period of time. When the coach brings you in, they want to see if the kid is driving it or the parents, are the parents sane and is the kid someone they'd like to hang out with during all the training (a complete switch from HS - college lax is 90% training/10% games-eg 17 games allowed for year or something like that). Don't go in talking money - there's not much. 3 pots of $ and you can only get $ from 2: merit, financial aid (loans) and athletic ($12.5 K if school funds and that's for players from all 4 years). So run the calculators and see what you can afford assuming no aid. Make sure kid can see himself there if NOT playing lax (injury or decides to quit). Coaches will string kids along until dust settles which means lots of kids won't be picked up until summer before senior year and many will be switching around. Only top prospects got calls. Once they commit, things open up. Do not be disapppointed if you don't get called/texted on Sept 1 or you get contact from schools you've never heard of - keep working on your 1) grades and 2) lacrosse. Don't leave it to fate: by 10th grade, get a list of places you're interested in, develop a short video (make sure coach sees it and it has variety). Start emailing your video link along with GPA, etc to coaches and asst coaches. Keep them apprised of your events. Ignore the bulk of those prospect emails - run by coaches. Don't waste $. Do UnderArmour though. Importance of club team play - coaches never go to school games but prefer to see dozens/hundreds at club tournaments.
