OP here -- fwiw, kids are 14 and 11. I just said to the 11 yr old, "be careful opening the door"... of course, he didn't hear me b/c he was focussed on chasing a fly around the back seat. Then he opened the door hitting the car next to us (and the driver was IN the car! I was not happy with 11 yr old. I know it wasn't intentional, and mistakes happen, but I wish kids would think about something other than themselves once in awhile. And, no... I didn't say anything to the other driver b/c I didn't know what to do. Should I have pulled out $40? That's all I had on me. Just trying to get a feel for what most people actually do.
Wow ok...this is different. You knock on their window if there is damage, like you said there was, and you say "I'm sorry, we just dinged your door. Do you want my insurance information?" Come on, OP! You know how this works. You don't hand them $40. You handle it like an adult. Your children will continue to be disrespectful because the example you're setting for them isn't really one that fosters respect, at least in this case. If this was me, I'd have gotten out and asked you for your insurance information. $40 and you didn't know what to do - ha! PLEASE!
