Went from a job in higher ed administration (and a PhD) making 110K. Stayed home for a few years (although I worked very part-time for my old mentor during those years). We bought a few rental properties (DH is in big law) and now I make about $140K a year in a combination of regular rental income and running a profitable Airbnb. Wouldn’t mind going back to the regular workforce because there is no respect for what I do, but I can’t justify working full time for less than I make as a part time property manager and I don’t want the stress of doing both at the same time.
This is an interesting post because it shows how we value respect for our jobs. I was a SAHM for a few years, but then got back into the full-time workforce and now have a job as an in-house senior attorney at a well-regarded corporation. I valued my time as a SAHM when my kids were little, but it's interesting how people seem to show more respect for my corporate job, even though both jobs are demanding and require a lot of skill.
