Apsva.us/engage. Elementary school initiative.
This - it's pretty well explained there. You will also find maps of current boundaries on apsva.us
Ion here. Thanks. That link was helpful. Doesn't seem like that big of a deal and like it's overall best for community. Why are people flipping out?
Because people hate change. It's really not that big of a deal in the long run. But some kids will have to move schools and, while they will be moved with others in their neighborhood they may be split up from their friends. I'm sure they will be fine. The kids will adjust more quickly than the parents. We need to balance capacity. APS has very limited options when it comes to locations to build schools which means schools can't be put in the optimal places. There are also some constructs that are hold-overs from a time when APS was declining in student population and had excess capacity. Those need to be fixed so some option school locations need to be changed and boundaries redrawn. Part of why everyone is freaking out is that APS encourages that because of the "Arlington Way' thing, which means they solicit a ton of citizen feedback. In other districts, the district would do the analysis, make a decision, and inform you the summer before as to what school you've been moved to. If APS would do that a whole lot of drama would be avoided, or at least limited to a few months of complaining. The Arlington Way has become a parody of itself. In the past, well meaning sandalistas would keep an open mind, etc. Now it’s just a hollow solicitation of feedback.
