The term is someone's way of describing their gender. Some gender labels you're likely more familiar with are man/male & woman/female.

In this case, the "nonbinary" part means that the person's gender does not align with either male or female, or, put another way, it would be an inaccurate characterization of their identity & lived experience to call them either a man or a woman. Their gender identity is outside of the strict male/female binary that many people use to describe gender.

The "femme" part means that they identify with femininity in some way. While "woman" does not comfortably and accurately reflect their identity, they have found that femininity does, to a sufficiently high degree that it's an important part of how they consider & label themselves.

So, a person who is neither man nor woman but does identify as in some ways feminine. [/quote]
