Bethesda already turnd down DA. They have ECNL. This league is for non-ECNL teams.
On the girls' side, right. They have boys' DA and girls' ECNL. That does raise an interesting question about this league, given the presence of a couple of clubs that have DA and ECNL. Seems a safe bet those clubs can't enter their DA and ECNL teams in this competition. What are the optics of having a potential "national champion" that's a B team?
Is that any different than the current USYSA National league set up? The winners are dubbed National champions, but since DA and ECNL teams don't participate, it's not a true national championship.
The winners of the USYSA are not considered "National" champions by USYSA. By winning the National League, the team earns a spot at the USYSA National Championship tournament without having to go through the State Cup / Regional Championship route. A couple of other things to keep in mind. Winners of the USYSA National Championship is still considered the proverbial "national" champion at that age group. ECNL and DA: ECNL is registered through US Club Soccer, which is different from USYSA. USYSA has been around for much longer. That said, almost every ECNL team cross registers with USYSA through their state level affiliates to ensure that ECNL teams can participate in State Cup, Regional Championships, and USYSA National Championships as well as USYSA regional and national competitions. The same is true for the clubs/teams on the boys side that compete in US Club Soccer sponsored leagues such as EDP and NPL. US Soccer Federation's DA teams are the only teams that are not allowed to compete in the USYSA National Championship Series (State Cup / Regional Championships / National Championship). These players are registered directly with US Soccer and are not registered through USYSA or US Club Soccer. This "New national/regional soccer system..." is just the new reconfiguration of the old USYSA regional/national "leagues" that had popped up to give the top teams in each state a higher level of competition outside of their home leagues/states. I have not paid much attention over the past couple of years, so my recollection of the specifics may be off a little, but the way it used to work was that if you won your State Cup, you would then qualify for the next year's Region 1 Champions League in which you would play against other state cup winners during the following fall and/or spring seasons on specific weekends. If you won the Region 1 Champions league, you qualified for that years Region 1 Championships without having to win the State Cup. There was also a 2nd tier regional league that featured the State Cup runner up's and other teams that qualified. I think if you won the Tier 2 league, you got promoted to the Champions league the next year. After many years of these competitions, USYSA added the "National League" through which teams that qualified for the league - either through winning or placing at the previous summer's Regional Championships would compete against each other at specific tournaments so as to directly qualify for the next summer's USYSA National Championships. On top of all of this, ECNL and US Club Soccer also have their "national championships," but in terms of the big picture and historical terms, the USYSA National Championships are still the true "national" champions because the competition is much broader and has a much deeper historical context.
