The meal plan is a lot of money if the kids are over 9. Under 9 it is a good rate. Over 9, they are charged as adults. The character meals are often a flat fee, like $45 a person, so now that my light eater is 11, we pay out of pocket and have him order smaller meals or appetizers. Kids under 2 are free, and they assume parents will feed them "off their plate" so that's amazing for the Disney Junior crowd. A family suite for April this year (for 6) is about $345 a night. YOu could use that to budget. Weekends tend to be $$$ than weekdays. You can call them and they can book beyond 12/18 (we used to do that). For a group of 6, you may want to try to rent timeshare points from a Disney Vacation Club service, like DVCrental.com (check facebook. Scott & Dave are the big names). You could get a 1 or 2 bedroom suite at Animal Kingdom Lodge, Old Key West or Saratoga Springs for a rate much lower than the "rack rate" for a room from those guys. If it is your 1st trip, you may feel safer booking right through Disney. Also, if you use a Disney travel agent, Disney pays them, not you, so it is like a free wedding planner who can save you $ and give you tips. For a family of 6, it makes sense to get a room with some kind of kitchen situation because you can keep some cereal, snacks, and chicken nuggets in the room (they sell these in the gift shops) to save some $ on dining out 2-3 times a day. Easter is late next year, so Feb/March would be a great time to go. I went at the end of Feb for a long weekend and it was fantastic weather and nice break from "will it snow/won't it snow".
