We just spent a night at the Lodge at Wisp. I wouldn't say it was luxury but it was clean, convenient, and had a pool/fitness center/hot tub/firepit. The website says it is renovated but it appeared we were in the older section. We really enjoyed the mountain and we are blue/green skiers only.
I second Wisp. It's three hours, relatively large especially for blue/green skiers, and as pp said - it has a decent lodge. I believe some of the rooms are renovated, but not all. There are also more restaurant choices around Deep Creek Lake, including a decent pizza place that gets packed. There is a nice view of the lake from some of the runs. We always stay a minimum of two nights though - drive up on Friday night, ski Saturday and half day Sunday, then drive home, or go for a three day weekend. Here's a good website that has profiles of all the resorts closest to DC. There are quite a few in Pennsylvania. A lot of people like Seven Springs and I have to confess I haven't been in over 20 years, but there were tons of unruly teenagers all over the slopes the several times that I have skied there. Wisp is a better family place - although my opinion may be outdated. http://www.dcski.com/ I've been wanting to try Canaan Valley or Timberline, but have never been. Maybe someone who has been there can give us the scoop on those two resorts. Have fun!
