I am newly single and curious about this. Are people expected to be on and connected most of the time? When dating, I love looking forward to spending time with the person. It seems that social media, staying in touch all the time would take away the specialness of waiting to see him. I also don't want the dude to know more or sooner than I want because of the Internet. Not that I am hiding, but it's about privacy and boundaries. I imagine that when i date someone, I won't ask him to fb friend me until it becomes a convenient way to RSVP an event or to join a group. May this look weird or like I'm hiding something? I like privacy and personal space.
I've been single again for about a year after 10 years of marriage. People establish early what their "on and connected" level will be. I am just not going to spend all day texting, but keeping in touch throughout the day as the relationship builds is fun. I am not particularly active on social media, especially compared to many of my friends, but I have a name that is easy to google and know a ton about me. I do think that being able to see that I really do have the job and family I claim I do establishes some level of trust for whomever I'm seeing. And I'm sad that this is necessary, but it helps for the "oh, he really is divorced and not just cheating" factor.
