I can do the math and reasonably assume he's probably in his late 30s or later. If he was in a serious relationship with a man in a more conservative time yet since then he has bounced from woman to woman without making much headway, instinct tells me his heart is really with a man and for some reason he's trying to make a go of it with a woman, probably in hopes of having a family and kids and all that.

Of course this is conjecture but your comment about sex seems to back this up. If he's only been with women for nine years and the sex is still just ok....hmm...mmm...
