Frankly, not good. I'm 44 and we have been trying for 7 years - and I got pregnant twice before with absolutely no problem too, once at 26 and also at 33, when we were actively using birth control! There really is a cliff as you get into your 40s and after 42 particularly it is a STEEP drop-off. I've watched it happen inexorably as I've done multiple IVF cycles over the past 4 years. I actually still make plenty of eggs, and those eggs even make embryos that develop to blastocyst stage (that is, they develop normally up to 5-7 days which is the time you'd normally need to implant them), but out of the 13 blasts we've made during the past two years we have not had a single chromosomally normal embryo among them. That said I don't think it's hopeless! But if you really want it I'd really recommend seeing an RE right away to get everything tested and so you can consider if you do want to try any sort of treatment to increase your chances. There's a lot you can do that's not nearly so invasive or expensive as IVF, but the sooner the better is always the rule. And trust me, your OB-GYN is not going to know what you need to know. Fertility is an extremely specialized field (as I learned to my regret, after listening to my OB tell me "oh, everything looks great, just go have your husband chase you around the bedroom" for 2.5 years before I finally went to an RE). Good luck!
Agree with the pp. I got pregnant within two months of no birth control and infrequent, not-trying sex at 39, had him at 40. No. 2 was a whole different story and required DE, had him at 45. Make an appt and go at it like rabbits.
