Jackson MS likely dropped because kids are opting for the Thoreau LLIV Center, instead of Jackson. That's the demographic that pulled Jackson up to begin with. In terms of educational quality, I would't be any more concerned for an honors or GE kid thanI was 5 years ago. Jackson is what it always was for non-AAP If my kid was AAP, I'd keep eye on it as Thoreau transitions to a full Center, and they look at moving all of Oakton ES to Thoreau. In terms of property value. Yeah. There could be a hit if the AAP decrease continues.
Well this may fit the PP's narrative of a concerted effort to ruin LJMS, it is simply not supported by the facts. If you look at the school profile for LJMS, the number of adv. academic kids has INCREASED over the past 3 years, not decreased. The number of white kids has increased a little, and then leveled off, but it has NOT decreased in the past three years. The FARMS rate and ESOL rates have had a slight DECREASE over the same time frame, (although the actual numbers of kids have been a slight increase). The Redfin ratings are based on Great Schools ratings. LJMS is rated as a 7. I'm not sure that's a change from past years, is it? I think it typically is a 7. Regarding Falls Church HS, the percentage of FARMS kids has actually decreased, although the total number is slightly higher than in past years. The percentage of ESOL, has increased, however... as did the total number of ESOL kids. It's a 4. Was it a 5 in the past? I can't recall. OP -- please specify why you think there has been a decrease in the ratings. I didn't look at your elem. school. As for the PP -- please look at the facts before you go spouting off with theories of victimhood.
Fact: Jackson got a bump last year because last year is when the AAP bulge class all went to MS. Expect a drop in absolute numbers. Fact: Oakton ES will stop being a split feeder and and move to Thoreau. And fact: increasing numbers of kids are staying at Thoreau. There is certainly a strong belief that Thoreau and Franklin are next up to become AAP Centers, but they are waiting on the new superintendent. So there is no plan on paper, it is likely headed that way. I got my facts by being an Oakton ES AAP parent.
The bolded isn't a fact. A "strong belief" is also called a "rumor." The principal at Thoreau as recently as this spring said there are no plans to make Thoreau a center. I actually would like it to be a center so that I don't have to stress about making a decision b/t TMS and LJMS for my AAP kid. And to me, it makes no sense to allow kids to place Into a school that is already over-crowded. If I were a kid zoned for LJMS (or a parent thereof), I would not be happy about out of zone kids opting into my already stretched to the max school. That said, my impression is that LJMS's principal is doing a good job and there are some dedicated parents trying to keep the PTA running. Your second "fact" that "OES will stop being a split..." is also not a "fact" -- it is in the planning stages, but who knows what could happen. And most importantly, OP's claim that Jackson suddenly dropped is WRONG. Jackson's rating didn't drop on Redfin or Great Schools. So, your arguments are based on a flawed premise. LJMS was a 7 last year as well. Jackson was an 8 on Great Schools back in 2013. Thoreau has been a 9 every year since 2012 (they don't post the ratings prior to that).
