We joined the Reston pools when our kids were very young. On the plus side, it was nice having so many pools from which to choose. One had slides, another was heated, one had a sand pit and Beach entry, one stayed open later in the season, etc. Also it was very affordable relative to country clubs and even swim clubs. The downside was there was no sense of community and we didn't feel like part of anything b/c there was no consistency in who we saw at the pool. Once my kids started school we switched to Hunter Mill which we liked much better. Kids did swim team and saw their friends there. They had special events and swim team was a great experience. Clubhouse and pool were nothing fancy but lifeguards and families were nice plus we only had to wait one summer to join and did an August temp membership that first summer while we were on the wait list. If you're looking for a place to go every day in the summer, I'd recommend a regular pool club over the Reston pools. If you're a more occasional user or you really want a good value, the Reston pools do the job. And....we didn't live in Reston so maybe if you do, there's more sense of community/knowing people.
