My periods have been all over the map.  I was on the pill for almost 10 years (4 different kinds) until I had to stop for medical reasons.  Then I didn't see aunt flow for 6 months and my periods were a mess for 2 years.  Then they levelled off.  They vary between short and long but I do not worry about it as much.  I took ovasitol and the were a little more predicable.  But stress can definitely impact my cycle dramatically.  My hormones are not at out of control as they once were.  I know because they used to cause out of control crying fits (I could call the dr and have them order a blood draw to confirm).  My PCOS symptoms can fluctuate dramatically and seem to change every few years.
