This wasn't recent, but the gds grads at my selective college struggled because they weren't used to the structure. They thought verbal bs alone would allow them to sail through. Some of them are still discovering themselves in europe on daddy's dime because they don't want entry level jobs.
I'm a GDS grad and think this statement is total BS. The one thing I know to be true of 99% of my peers was that we breezed through college because GDS prepared us so well for a college environment. I do know one person who failed out of college, but it was a situation that had nothing to do with GDS - he got into a top tier college as a legacy, fell into drugs, and couldn't pull it together. I don't mean to discount your personal experience, but I don't think it's broadly accurate.
My recent GDS grad has been well-prepared both in terms of substantive knowledge (placed into honors tracks or upper division courses) and academic skill sets (strong math background, good writer, analytic, knows how to do close reading of a text). In fact, if there's been any issue wrt structure and preparation it has been the GDS left DC with the expectation that lectures would be more helpful than they often are in college. So DC actually went into college with less of a DIY attitude toward exam prep/synthesis of the course than I had (coming from a public school background where the quality of the teaching was more hit-or-miss). In general, the issue college poses wrt structure is how well kids will function with less. No one taking attendance, fewer assessments, the ability to fall way behind without anyone noticing, etc. Not how will they adapt to more.
