Background-- SVP level position. At that level there are 6 at the organization. I came in at the level 5 years ago right as they phased out contracts for new hires. Something I knew going in. Job has been great. Great team, great coworkers. I have grown in the job and taken over new responsibilities not much upward movement but I knew that going into it. We are doing reviews now and I got, yet another, excellent review. I asked for a raise, I have only gotten a COLA (2%) forbthr last 5 years. I laid out my deliverables over the last 2 year. One time and made the clients happy. I also researched comparable positions at other organizations and I am about 20% below market. I do know that those on contract (I am only SVP without one) have automatic 10% annual raises built into their 3 year contracts. I asked for a 20% raise to bring me up to market. While my boss was very complementary he basically said that for people not on contract you need to go get an offer from another organization which you can then use to negotiate a higher salary here. I was pretty taken aback by that. It really put me off that a raise wouldn't be based on my actual work product which he had just deemed excellent. I am not sure what to do here. We have a good relationship so I feel I can discuss this further with him. Any thoughts or suggestions on how to navigate? I could go look for another job (and maybe should) but that would be time consuming and take away from my current productivity. Thoughts?
