My son gets in trouble for violating the dress code on occasion. I don't find that they pick on him. I'm betting that he gets in trouble only a fraction of the times he violates it. He finds it unfair that girls can wear sleeveless and boys can't so it's his form of protest.
It's the exact opposite at the HS my kids attend. Boys can wear tank tops but girls can only wear them if they aren't too low-cut and the straps are wide enough to cover their forbidden bra straps. DD has gotten one dress code violation. She wore a tank that I thought was fine, but her bra strap kept sliding down her shoulder so she was sent to the office to call me. At their school the procedure is the student has to call a parent to report their violation and give the parent an opportunity to bring them another clothing item. If the parent can't or won't respond, then they are told to put on their PE uniform. If it's an upperclassman who may no longer have the required PE class, they're given something out of the unclaimed lost & found box. Neither DH or I considered it an immediate situation where we needed to leave work to bring her a shirt, so she was allowed to put her PE uniform tee over the tank and continue her day. I think a friend later loaned her a hoodie so she could ditch the gym shirt. We didn't see it as a big deal and she's since learned to make sure to wear a bra whose straps stay up vs. her favorite worn out bra . I think some teachers are bigger sticklers than others. Also, some violations are more apparent with some students than others because of their body shape/proportions. When I was a teen, my bff was always getting in trouble for wearing shirts that were too revealing. No, they weren't low-cut or sleeveless... her boobs were too big, therefore the shirt was pulled tightly across her chest, which made it more noticeable. Looking back at the photos from that time she'll laugh and say she wished she'd just not been so vain and went up a size so her shirts fit better. DS has never gotten a violation but he does have a history teacher who makes the girls do the fingertips to their sides rule for skirts and shorts in his classroom. Literally, as they walk through the door he makes them put their arms down. My son's exact words about this were, "that's why we call him Pervy Mr. P...., because he's, like, obsessed with checking out girl's legs! No one else even notices that kind of stuff, you know? Like, I've never seen Female Teen and thought 'dang, her shorts are looking exceptionally short today!'" Love that kid so much.
