My sister was overweight growing up. She handled the comments differently than I think most did at her age. When someone called her fat, she would just say yep and keep it moving. It got to the point that kids didn't get a kick out of it once they realized their words had no affect on her. She also worked hard to lose weight. She played multiple sports and used the home gym. Parents got the whole family involved, even my skinny self. Sister is 30 with high self esteem and normal weight.
I did that as well and yes, it does work. When kids realize there is no reaction from you, then it's not fun. But they could always move on to finding something else to pick on so just be forewarned. I would encourage OP to read the book Carbohydrate addict kids. In truth, some kids and adults are just more sensitive to the effects of carbs and it's hard to do but scaling back will likely help out. This does not mean eliminating carbs, it means reducing carbs in the overall diet and replacing with protein. Another thing that will really help is reducing the amount of processed food. Again, this is really tough but it does help and it is so much more healthful overall. A good place for info is 100daysofrealfood blog.
