1) If the stain is fresh, lay a cloth rag on it to soak up as much liquid as you can. If the stain is dry, skip this step. 2) Use an enzyme cleaner. I don't think Nature's Miracle is strong enough to eliminate urine odors. Some of the other extra strength enzyme cleaners work better. I like Simple Solution, and lately, I've been using the Simple Green Bio Dog solution with great success (I like the scent, too). If you're just spraying it on, it's not good enough. Unscrew the cap and pour it over the stain making sure it soaks into the padding under the carpet. You don't need to pour out a quart of it, but make sure you've covered the entire stain and used at least as much liquid as the dog provided. Let this sit for 30+ minutes, and then use a towel to mop up the excess. Once it dries, you'll find the urine odor is probably gone. 3) If a stain remains, especially if it's vomit or poop, use the Spot Shot aerosol stain remover product. Spray it on as it says in the instructions and let it sit for a minute. Then use a rag to give the area a good scrub. What you see after this is as much stain as you're going to get out, but it should be mostly or all the way gone. This product needs to be rinsed, so dump a cup of cold water on top of it and soak it up with a clean rag. Then let it dry. 4) I do have a Hoover Carpet Cleaner (~$100 on Amazon) which did a good job on large areas but it doesn't really get the odor out of the padding. Most professional services don't quite pull that off, either, so you're going to have to spot treat for the odor before shampooing the surface of the carpet.
