However, I'm guessing this kind of excuse making and enabling is part of what led him to the place he's in today. He will be a relatively young man when he gets out of prison. I certainly hope he doesn't walk around believing it was totally accidental and that it was all just a big misunderstanding and an oopsie. These are the choices you made. This is what happened.
