We moved from CA to MD. The schools to me look pretty awesome and so far we are having a great experience at my DC's elementary school (only up to first grade so far). The high school we are zoned for has AP classes, is a performing arts magnet, has 92% graduation rate, 60% non-white student population. Other friends I know are talking about moving to other school districts for "better schools." There apparently is a bit of a rough "inner city" element to the school but a very small part of it and the kids from the families I'm talking about are in upper middle class, educated families unlikely to end up in gangs. In all the reading I've done, success in school comes from being in a strong intact family, a supportive community (we attend a church), having educated parents, and a good income. From my own life, exposure to diversity in race, religion, income are good to keep people grounded in reality. I would not want my biracial kids to be in an area where the school was 80-90% white and they grow up thinking that's what the world looks like. So I guess what I am looking for is reassurance from people whose kids went to schools like this one and felt it was good for them. Sometimes I wonder if since we could afford more if I am being a bad parent for thinking this school is just fine for my kids.
