So, the zoo was crazy today

I know someone asked if they thought it would be crowded this weekend, and um...yeah. Got there just at 10am and we were one of the last cars let in to parking lot E! That is the last one. There were bazillions of people there. We still had fun because it was a glorious day and my friend and I are pretty laid back, but if you are at all the kind of person that gets annoyed easily with waiting, or crowds, etc. (ahem my husband for example) I wouldn't go near the zoo this weekend!

If you missed the posts yesterday, it is spring break for many kids, plus a ton of people in town for cherry blossoms, holidays, etc. Not to mention the nice weather is bringing people out in droves.

Thanks for posting. We're going Sunday, so it's good to know what to expect.

It was super crazy today! Very hard to walk two feet without bumping into someone and my kids wore out fast from the lines and crowds. We didn't even get to see the pandas : ( Next time I'll go when it's not beautiful outside!

I went with my child's field trip in November and it was perfect. We have the whole place to ourselves.

I was running some errands up and down Conn. Ave. betw. Woodley and Cleveland Parks yesterday afternoon and noticed a lot more tired and grumpy zoo-goers on the street that usual. It did seem like celebrating the beautiful weather took a little more out of them than they expected, and I'm sure high visitor volume had something to do with it.

Personally, I thought it was great that the normally quiet pavement in Woodley Park was buzzing with life (even slightly irritable life) until I saw that the escalator was producing a bumper crop of escaleftors-- more, in fact, than I think I had ever seen before.

It is posts like this that remind me why we stick it out with our old house, with no closet space and rattling windows, in a relatively crappy DCPSchool -- a couple of Metro stops from the Zoo

There's no need or desire to fight crowds when we can pop in and out in an hour, on off days. The National Zoo is not an event for us. Adequate snow plowing is!

If you can go in the later afternoon (3 p.m or so) it should be better. The families will probably leave by then to take a nap (and maybe the kids too!)

But, would the animals still be out that late in the afternoon?

I avoid the zoo on pretty days, and go on chilly overcast days. No crowds, and the animals are much more active! Sunny warm weather makes them sleepy and boring.

I love the zoo in the winter!

Do they have somewhere important to be?

We go EARLY, EARLY to the zoo in the summer. Grounds open at 6, I believe, and if you can be there early (7? 8?) it's totally worth it. No, the buildings aren't open, but the animals are out and having a blast before the heat!

we went this morning and it was perfect....left Clarendon at 9:40am and arrived at the zoo parking lot off of RockCreek at 9:51am; parked and were there until noon. 2 hours is it for my 2 year old and 4 year old. At noon when we were leaving it was beginning to become a madhouse. I'd hate to see it right now. We had a blast, the weather was beautiful and we didn't hit any of the crowds. Little one felll asleep on ride home and is upstairs napping away.

We were at the zoo yesterday 4/1 and it was INSANE. We got there very late, thinking most people would leave. We only stayed for one hour from 4-5. Then we tried to go early to the American History Museum this morning (you think I would have learned from going to the zoo yesterday). Nightmare. Too many people everywhere!!
