| At what age can I expect no more naps? |
| In our case, around 4. We kept "quiet time" during the same time frame, listening to cds, etc. Seemed like nap was dropping at early 3, but hung in with books on tape and it came back after several weeks. |
Hi there
Normally, kids phase out of naps around 3 1/2-4. However, as the PP said, quiet time usually takes the place of nap time. |
| My 4 year old dd still takes naps about 50% of the time. We send her up for nap, and then if she doesn't, she does something quiet while her 2 year old sister naps. |
| It can vary by quite a bit. My dc (always a good sleeper) consistently napped until around 5 and at 6, I can still sometimes get him to take a nap when he's really tired. |
| When they stop napping, how do their nightly sleep habits change? For example, will my son's now 9pm bedtime suddenly switch to 7 or 8pm? Or do they truly not need as much sleep? |
| When my DS stopped napping around age 4, I started putting him to bed around 7:30 and he would be asleep by 8. He wakes up around 7ish so he is getting 11 hrs per night which works for him. I would think 9pm would be a very late bedtime esp if your child needs to get up to go school in the morning. |
Same here. |
| Just to show how much it can vary - my son slept an average of six hours a day with two naps, then three to four hours once he went to one afternoon nap, and suddenly at 2.5 started dropping naps entirely. (Talk about a shock to my system.) At that age he slept about 50 percent of the time but by a year later had pretty much dropped them completely. He's 4.25 now and still has regular rest time in his room on the weekends (and at preschool, but he looks at books while others nap). |
| My son stopped napping at 2.5. A little before then. Actually, a month after his sister was born he stopped taking naps. I really, really, really loved that (sarcasm!) |
My DH still hasn't outgrown his nap and he is 35
|
| pp LOL |
| Mine napped on weekdays at daycare for a full 2 hours up until she started kindergarten. On weekends after age 4 she stopped napping. On weekends, that meant she would be in bed asleep by 7:20pm. On weekdays her bedtime was closer to 8:30pm. |
Same here! And the biggest teaser was that my newborn and my toddler actually overlapped nap times so I had exactly 45 glorious minutes of peace and quiet...that lasted for about 3 weeks. I can't even get my toddler upstairs for quiet time - hence I check DCUM after hours now days. |

My son is 3.5 and naps about 4-5 days/week. On those days he's asleep around 9 pm. On the days he doesn't nap, bedtime is 8 pm. Morning wakeup is usually the same (about 7-7:30 am).
It seems however that in his preschool, he's the exception. Most of the other parents are shocked when I say that he still naps. |
