Infant front facing car seat

Anonymous
My little one is 95% of her weight and height. He is pouring out of his infant car seat at 7 months. Should I turn him around-I have Graco infant Snugride? The seat said for rear facing only. Has anyone faced and do we upgrade to a toddler front facing? if so which one do people recommend. I like the idea of him reclining so he can rest in our long drives. Any thoughts.

You need to upgrade to a convertible but it needs to remain rear-facing for safety at her age. It will be much more comfortable for her though.

NO and yes.

Children must be rear facing unil they are 1 year old and at least 20 lbs. Regardless of weight, your child must remain rear facing until she is at least 1. The infant carseats don't even turn around.

However, by all means get a new carseat if she has maxed out her infant seat. The convertible seats can go backwards for infants and turn-around for forward facing

Make sure to have it professionally installed now and again when you turn it, as there are ways to switch around the latches that are often done improperly by parents.

You need a convertible seat and while many of them say you can turn them around front-facing (I forget when) it is HIGHLY recommended that you keep your baby rear-facing as long as possible for safety reasons. The sources for this recommendation are numerous. Here is a good video that illustrates why this is important

You have to wait until their neck muscles are strong enough to hold their head in a crash. Before 1, they definitively don't have enough to hold their head, even less so if they're heavy.
We had our son in a rear-facing convertible seat until he was 2.5 years old. He was just fine. Now he complains if we break fast.

one year AND 20lbs, not either or, it is both. Get a new seat, I had to replace my infant seat at 4 months due to lenght of baby. The convertible ones are just that, convert to forward or backward as needed.

if your child is that big he/she (you use both pronouns) probably should have been switched to a convertible seat a while ago. Our son was always around 80% and had to switch by 5 months.
Properly installed, your baby will be reclined enough to be comfortable--this may require you to place something under the seat where the back and bottom of your car's backseat meet. PLEASE get your seat installation checked out by an inspector when you buy it.

I second "sunnyskies'" post. Please get a larger car seat, but do not turn your car seat to face front. I did not turn my twins around until they were 2 on the suggestion of multiple police officers and car seat safety professionals to keep them rear facing as long as possible. Children's neck muscles are too weak and if you get in an accident their necks can snap from the impact if you turn them around too quickly. This happened to the children of a colleague of mine. Tragic and horrible.

DD outgrew the graco snugride at 4 months because of her weight. She's now in a rear facing britax. I wouldn't even consider turning her to front-facing even though her legs do seem a bit squished because she's so tall.
