Does Georgetown maternity rooms have internet?

Anonymous
I continue to get conflicting answers when I ask my OB and other people at GUH, so I am hoping there are some DCUMers out there who have recently given birth there who will know. Do the rooms in the maternity ward have the internet? I will probably be in the hospital for at least a week after I give birth, and would like to know if I will be able to log onto my computer (to send pics of the baby especially) while I am there. I was told that it is like going to a hotel where you have to pay per day for internet access, which is not a problem, I just want to know in advance.

Are you kidding? You are worried about bringing a computer to the hospital with you?

This will sound harsh, but I think you are crazy. You might want to just try to enjoy having your baby and spending time with your baby and sleeping when the baby is sleeping.

Or maybe you are having an exceptionally easy pregnancy.........when I was about due, the last thing I was thinking of was sending out baby pictures.

Good luck with your internet.

When I gave birth there in September 2007, the room did not have internet access. Did you to the tour of ther maternity and delivery ward? you could ask the nursing staff there. They told me then that they would have new rooms in the near future or an expansion of the building soon and that those rooms would have internet access. Don't know if that has happened already.

I think when I did the tour last year, they said they didn't have internet access, but that you were welcome to use the phone line if you had a dial-up provider. but, I don't know anyone who uses dial-up anymore!

For an alternative view to Sunny Skies, when I was in the hospital with #1, I was on my Blackberry *constantly* and would have died without it. So, I agree that this is an important question!

Okay, if I had had a blackberry at the time, I might have used that (now that I have one, I am an addict.)

That being said, I am very glad that I did *not* have one then. So I still stand by my original post - take a break and enjoy it!

(I don't think I even watched tv and I was in the hospital for a week. But I had a very hard and long and unmedicated labor that ended up in a c-section, so my recovery was difficult. If I was going to be in the hospital for a week and *knew* it would be easier, I might be saying something else....

I agree with PP -- I was only in the hospital for 2 days and I was going stir crazy...internet access would have been wonderful (I delivered at Sibley and they only have access down in the Cafeteria). Yes, you want to bond and spend time with your baby but a newborn also sleeps most of the day

I was also on my blackberry extensively during my 5-day stay at the hospital (c-section). And I would not describe myself as a "blackberry addict" by any stretch. My daugher was in the NICU and I had to pump constantly in order to make my milk come in. Surfing the net was the only way I could stay awake for the pumping sessions.

To answer the original question, in July 07 there was no internet at GUH.

Just the *thought* that WiFi might be coming to GUH in February 2008 got DH pretty excited as he thought about waiting endlessly during labor or after. I don't think OP is nuts for asking the question.

I ended up delivery in late Jan and as of then there wasn't any WiFi capability. I am not sure they've gotten around to it yet. Your OB won't know. You might want to call labor and delivery directly and ask them. Or walk over the next time you're in for an appointment. The buildings are connected and you can walk there easily from the 3rd floor physicians' office.

15:08 PP here. Don't mind the bad grammar "I ended up delivery..." Zheesh! Mommy brain attacks abound. Plus, typing too fast!!!

I delivered at Georgetown in Feb and there was no internet available in the rooms. I too used my blackberry extensively though!

OP. That's too funny. I am so like you! Can't stand when I don't have internet access. Our DSL went down for a couple days and I was in the fetal position by the time they fixed it. You go girl!
