I was trying on a bathing suit for an upcoming trip today and DH commented on how many bruises I had. I realized I had a ton of them, front and back of legs, some on my arms. I probably have 15, all no bigger than a quarter, most nickle sized. I mean I know where some of them come from, like the ones on my thighs, I remember DS walking up my legs while I was sitting on the floor (18 months 28 lbs so I guess it could cause a bruise?) I have been on a diet since about October and have lost about 30 pounds, I eat about 12-1500 calories per day, but have days where I will eat more, about once a week, and indulge in something.
This is something new, I never remember bruiseing so easily, I have noticed it a few times in the past couple months but didn't think much of it. I take vitamins daily but have slacked the past few days. My first thought was low iron maybe? Anyone else ever had anything like this? I have an MD appointment on Tuesday for yearly stuff so I will ask about it then too. |
My first thought, like you, is that it is anemia. My sister was anemic (under control now) and she had lots of small bruises too. Good that you're getting it checked. |
When I have had that problem is was always iron deficiency anemia. You can have a CBC done to rule out anything more serious, but my experience with this has always been anemia. |
OP here, so if you were anemic did you take iron supplements? Do you recommend any particular ones, I have heard they make you constipated. |
I think you should get it checked out by a doctor. It is a marked change for you, and that is a concern. Hopefully it is just a temporary nutritional problem caused by your diet, but there are other, more serious possible causes. |
Vitron-C are good iron pills to take. If you have SEVERE anemia, there are other forms of treatment, like IV infusions. |
Not to scare you, but it could be leukemia. Please get checked by a doctor asap. |
could be a mild form of von-willebrand disease. I have it (as do 1% of the population, but most don't know it). It's no biggie, but you'd need to know this in case you ever have any major operations (need to take clotting factor ahead of time). GL! |
To answer OP's question about iron supplements: They do make you constipated and some can give you a metallic nasty taste in your mouth. I was put on an iron rich diet when I had severe anemia. It was based on dark green leaves, beets, liver and other very yummy (ugh!) things. I still had to take the supplement, but not for so long, since the diet was helping. And the diet also helps with the constipation because it's rich in fibers. Good luck! |
My friend's dad would bruise easily because he had circulatory and heart problems. Do you have or a family history of either? |
My advice for the iron tablets are to 1. take them at night so you don't regurgitate the flavor during the day 2. take with vitamin C to aid absorption 3. avoid taking with calcium (if you take a supplement do it in the morning) because it will hinder absorption 4. Eat iron rich foods...spinach for one. Legumes are good also.
When I've taken iron it can cause either constipation or diarrhea. It just depends on how your body responds to it. In lower dosages it may not cause any side effects. This is what I have found from being anemic off and on for 20 yrs. Definitely have your doctor run a CBC to be sure there isn't anything more serious going on. |
I was hospitalized two years ago for sever anemia. I had a five unit transfusion. I had a ton of bruises and no clue why. Please get a CBC so you know what exactly your issue is.
Vitron-C is what I take daily. It has vitamin C added to aid absorption. I have a list of iron rich foods which I received from one of my doctors. |
11:41 here, meant to say, if you would like the list leave your email and I will send it to you. |
Florodix is a liquid supplement often recommended by midwives because it doesn't cause constipation. http://www.florahealth.com/flora/home/usa/products/R64771.htm
I tend to get anemic while pregnant and breastfeeding (even while taking prenatals) so I just take a SlowFE and a vitamin C pill (or OJ) a couple times a week. If I'm pregnant I also take it along with a colace or fiber pill. |
OMG! "not to scare you" crap . . . ridiculous OP, if you've lost that much weight and have changed your diet significantly, it's a deficiency. I don't know how you feel about dark, leafy vegetables, but most are high in iron and good for you! |
