free (low cost) activities for a baby/toddler?

Where can I go in the District with my infant for music time or story time or some other activity?

The National Building Museum has a really nice free indoor play space. www.nbm.org No, it doesn't have "music time" or "story time" but there are some nice, specific, building-related types of activities that you can do with small children. And it's metro accessible, though I've never had a difficult time finding street parking.

Similarly, the John Paul II Cultural Center (www.jp2cc.org) also has a nice, free, indoor, interactive hands-on play space for toddlers. Nice big free parking lot, too.

If you're only looking for music or story times, have you checked out any local libraries? I know the ones out here in PG County have really wonderful toddler story times and would expect the ones in the District are the same.

Does the JPII center have as much to do as the Building Museum? My son loves it there, but the Cultural Center seems like a trek from where I live so want a review before I go...

In my opinion, yes, it does. And the fact that you don't have to hassle about parking helps too. However I will say that the JPII center has a lot more to do for older kids, stuff that is just a little too advanced for a 2 year old, although I do love their play space for babies/toddlers.

Libraries often have story time or kiddie movie day - I know the Cleveland Park library does. You might also check the District of Columbia's Parks and Recreation Dept. - I think they have activities as well.

go to the public library. They have story times. so do many book stores, even some kid's clothing stores.
You'll also find ads for other activities there.

And you can do a music class yourself, by just playing music. Alternatively, go see any free musical performance. My son loves the metro because there are often performers at our stops.

Cleveland Park - Wednesday AM's I think - story time but also singing. I haven't been for a few months but it was great.
Mt. Pleasant Library
Borders downtown or Georgetown
MLK Library downtown

Just call around to confirm the day and time.

Thank you all for the ideas. I was particularly pleased to find out about the Cleveland Park Library. Many thanks!
