I'm new to all of this. In fact, my DS is only 4 months old. But I heard the waitlists can be very long.

I noticed people use a lot of acronyms like CCPC or NCRC - what do these stand for?

And can anyone suggest a couple of good Catholic preschools and Montessori schools?

thanks

Well, there is one preschool which is both Catholic and Montessori -- Christian Family Montessori. The school includes a program in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd which is a wonderful little program that helps children develop a relationship with God and appreciation for the Mass. The Catechesis was developed by a student of Maria Montessori. It takes Montessori principles and applies them to religious training.

I have a friend whose children attend Christian Family and they love it. I am a big fan of Manor Montessori but there are a lot of very good Montessori schools out there.

NCRC stands for National Child Research Center http://www.ncrcpreschool.org/ I am not sure about the other one.

As for admissions -- I've looked at both Catholic programs and Montessori -- the process usually begins in the fall prior to the year your child will start (basically the fall of the year when your child is 2). Best wishes.

My DC goes to Franklin Montessori in D.C. and loves it. The school is also opening a toddler class next fall.

If you're in the Bethesda area, the Woods Academy is an independent Catholic school, and it starts with a 3-year montessori program.

CCPC-Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church. It seems that most Catholic schools start at K.

If you live in NoVa, a lot of preschools accept applications any time and admit kids based on the waiting list. DC preschools generally accept applications from Oct-Feb for the following school year, so you would not apply until the fall before your child is ready to enter preschool.

The whole process can be very overwhelming, but if you keep up with this site, you'll get the hang of it soon!
